'Its in in your hands'

We had a program on 5th march wherein Mallika Ganapathy, renowned special educator spoke about how as a parent we should, observe, ask 'WHY?' a child does a certain 'behavior' and try to help the child, instead of always stopping the behavior, in a talk titled 'Sensory Integration Demystified'.

She suggested instead of running around from therapy to therapy, try to help the child at home, doing simple things which help his sensory seeking or overload, by giving more or less of the sense aspect in question ie if a child likes to mash things with his fingers- keep plenty of dough, other soft toys, etc around, letting him get his fill of it, or on other hand he can't stand loud noises, keep headphones with music/ear plugs handy to block out such noise. She said the parent was the prime person to really help the child.

We also had three mom cooperative groups who work together to produce products and one mom who helps her daughter make jewellery.

'Our Spaces' another group displayed their food products, sold yummy cookies and banana muffins.

'Sai Bakery' sold their wonderful cakes, brownies and other goodies.

'Brush with Art moms had an exhibition of their kids works.

The theme of the day was, as parents we can do a lot to help our children lead happier lives, with greater fulfillment and sense of accomplishment. Its up to us.

  1. Yes I believe that parents are the best educators and therapist and can work out a holistic pragram for a child with any type of disability.

This is the reason why I worked out a program for parents and educators who can work with their kids at home to overcome a lot of issues. This is a program by Liz Weaver who believes in a holistic program and works keeping all perceptual issues in mind.
